Introduced in 2005 by the UK Government, a community interest company is a type of company designed for social enterprises that want to use their profits and assets for the public good.
In order to register as a CIC, a business must first apply to Companies House with a statement of its social objectives along with a legal declaration that its assets will only be used for those purposes, helping your 'community'. Therefore, there are strict limitations as to the amount of dividends or performance-related interest a CIC can pay its members or investors and some don't pay dividends at all. Positive Change Media is one such company, we are limited by guarantee and transparent accounts, every year, will show exactly where your money has been used and who we've helped.
Any surplus is reinvested in the business, we are not driven by the need to maximise profit or pay dividends. We have an asset lock so any equipment, cameras or computers remain locked into the CIC community, governed by a government regulator.
We can't be involved politically, but we can support your media production.
Climate change and the damage being done to the natural environment are the biggest issues facing us all in the next 50 years, beyond covid, war or recession. If you are in a position to help, like I was, please help your community, however large and wherever it is.
You need to be committed to start a CIC and you also can't be driven by profit. Your work is community driven, you just need to decide who your community is.
